AKRON, Ohio — Akron's historic Firestone Plant #1 with its iconic clock tower will soon be demolished after the city rejected a last-minute bid to turn the facility into its new police headquarters.

In an email to 3News, city of Akron spokeswoman Stephanie Marsh said the proposal from Amerimar Realty Co. was "not a feasible path forward for the property, or in the best interest of City taxpayer funds."

Demolition of the 115-year-old plant will be handled by the Eslich Wrecking Company, which is currently doing asbestos abatement work on the buildings.

The city says demolition of the plant's "Back bay #4" will begin "on or about" Dec. 8. Work on Bay #3 will begin in mid-January, Bay #2 will start in mid-February, with the front bay demolition slated to start in mid-March. Demolition of
