The community is rallying around the family of Geoff Fox, the former WTNH-TV meteorologist who became a trusted voice in Connecticut homes for decades, after he died earlier this week following a nine-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

While he fought courageously, loved ones said, the battle was expensive. Fox's family is left with a lifetime of memories and a mountain of medical debt and expenses from the time he could not work.

His cousin Melissa Fox created a GoFundMe to help alleviate those worries. The campaign has already raised more than $10,000 of its $38,000 goal as of Friday, only a day after it was created.

According to the page, the family used up their savings and built significant debt during his illness. Melissa said they faced “medical expenses not covered by insurance,” “basic living expenses while Geoff couldn't work,” “ongoing care and treatment costs,” and “daily necessities for their household.”

She added that his wife “Helaine is left not only grieving the loss of her beloved husband but facing crushing financial pressure that no family should endure after such a devastating loss.”

Memorials have flooded in since Fox died in his sleep on Tuesday. Fox spent more than 20 years as a meteorologist for WTNH-TV and worked in news and radio for decades at other stations.

"Geoff was more than a meteorologist — he was a familiar and trusted presence in countless homes and hearts, someone whose voice and warmth made the skies a little less uncertain," Linda Sayers Sandrey wrote on Facebook. "Through decades of service, he brought not only the forecast, but connection, compassion, and community."

Fox was known for his quick wit and drive to help others, but cancer took something from him, Melissa Fox wrote.

“Although he survived the grueling Whipple surgery plus multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, he was never the same," she wrote. His stamina faded, and “when vocal cord problems developed, working became nearly impossible.”

Melissa said she hopes that the community that Geoff loved so much will help his family in their critical time of need.

"Geoff spent his career giving to others — to his viewers, his communities, and countless charitable causes," she wrote. "Now it's our turn to give back to the family he loved so much."
