Hamilton County Commissioners met on Wednesday to discuss a tax freeze program that would help seniors on fixed income stay in their homes despite rising property values and tax bills.
“It's an insurance policy for these seniors–many of whom get up every day not knowing if they're going to choose between their prescriptions or their electric bill, groceries, or their gas bill,” says Hamilton County Commissioner David Sharpe of District 6.
The resolution is based on an optional Tennessee law that freezes property tax rates at the current rate for seniors over 65 years old. To qualify, seniors have to receive an annual income less than what’s adjusted for that year. If calculated for 2024, that number would be $48,250.
Right now, Hamilton County is part of Tennessee's tax relief program.
