Federal officials have recently shut down a 10,000-acre logging operation following a federal judge's order on Monday, who cited the environmental impact of the project on the area's grizzly bear population.

After the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were sued by the environmental organization, the Center for Biological Diversity, in 2022, U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen granted a preliminary injunction in 2023 and has now ruled that the federal agencies violated the law in their operations.

The agencies are now required to reassess how the Knotty Pine Project, based in northwest Montana, will impact wildlife and habitat while the operation remains on hold.
