The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to issue a blanket ban on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports, The Times of London said this week. Incoming IOC President Kirsty Coventry campaigned on the policy and the IOC’s medical and scientific director Dr. Jane Thornton revealed results of a science-based review that suggested athletes born male retain physiological advantages, even after reducing testosterone levels. It’s not expected the new ban will be in place in time for next year’s Winter Olympics in Milan, but will likely be implemented at the 2028 Summer Games, set for Los Angeles.
