A driver died after being trapped in a five-vehicle crash on Route 283 in Dauphin County, Londonderry Fire Company announced on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 5:15 p.m.

Crews were dispatched to Route 283 westbound at Mile Marker 3.8 near the Vine Street exit, where they found three vehicles in the median and one driver confined inside a passenger car, according to the fire company.

Firefighters from Engine 59 arrived first and began the extrication. Engine 54 and Rescue 88 soon joined them, and all crews worked together to remove the passenger door and roof to free the trapped driver, officials said.

Two people were transported to the hospital.

The driver who had been trapped later died from his injuries, according to the fire company. His name has not been released.

Utility 54 and Company 54 Fire Police shut down both lanes of Route 283 west, sending drivers onto the on-ramp to bypass the scene. Captain 54-1 blocked the eastbound high-speed lanes because of a large field of debris, the release said.

Crews remained on scene for more than three hours while the Pennsylvania State Police crash reconstruction team investigated.
