The Allegheny County Health Department is urging parents to immediately stop using ByHeart infant formula after federal regulators linked the product to a botulism outbreak affecting infants in more than a dozen states.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a national recall Tuesday for all ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula products, including unexpired lots of formula cans and single-serve “anywhere pack” sticks.
The decision follows reports linking more than a dozen suspected or confirmed infant botulism cases to the product.
As of Friday, the FDA had received reports of 23 infants with suspected or confirmed botulism who were all exposed to ByHeart formula, spanning across 13 states including one case in Pennsylvania. Texas, Arizona and California have each reported three cas
