Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said if his party forms government in 2027, one of the first orders of business would be to repeal Bills 18 and 20, as well as the Recall Act.
Meanwhile, Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams suggested his office will introduce the UCP’s new provincewide code of conduct for municipalities in the spring.
The two provincial politicians, who sit on opposing sides of the aisle in the Alberta legislature, made the points Friday during their respective keynote addresses at the Alberta Municipalities (AB Munis) convention in downtown Calgary.
Bill 20, which the UCP government enacted in 2024, included a ban on electronic vote counters for this year’s municipal elections and allowed for the introduction of political parties in Calgary and Edmonton.
