Thousands of packaged food products on supermarket shelves still contain industrial trans fats putting Australians at increased risk of heart disease.

An analysis by The George Institute for Global Health of more than 28,000 packaged foods and drinks from major Australian supermarkets found that while only four products explicitly listed partially hydrogenated oils — the main source of iTFAs — more than 4200 products contained ingredients where the processing method and inclusion of iTFAs was not disclosed.

Created by turning liquid vegetable oils into solid fats, iTFAs are most commonly found in cheap, fried and ultra-processed foods such as biscuits, popcorn, pastry products, instant noodles and frozen pizzas.
