CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Ohio first responders are looking to amend Senate Bill 56. They want to use 10-14% of the state’s recreational marijuana tax revenue to pay for trauma treatment for first responders.
“Most people in their life experience one, two, or three traumatic incidents,” said Jay McDonald, President of the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police. “For first responders, it’s way more than that every single day”.
A Clinical Psychology Review study shows one in seven first responders develops PTSD from their daily work.
States like Georgia and South Carolina are already covering the cost of treatment.
McDonald believes it’s time for Ohio to catch up and cover some of these needs. He thinks this could help retention numbers and decrease burn out buy tackling mental health issues so
