A massive great white shark briefly surfaced several miles off the Jersey Shore on Tuesday night.

The shark, named Contender, is the largest adult male tagged by OCEARCH, a non-profit marine group that tags and monitors the movement of sharks in the world’s oceans.

Contender’s tracker “pinged” at 9:14 p.m. Tuesday at least 30 miles east of Sea Isle City, according to OCEARCH.

Contender was about 13 feet, 9 inches long and weighed 1,653 pounds when he was tagged Jan. 17 about 45 miles off the coast along the Florida-Georgia border. Since then, the shark has covered 4,309 miles in 299 days, OCEARCH said.
