BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Two Windsor women are accused of animal cruelty after PETA workers found several dead dogs outside a home in Bertie County.
Bertie County deputies say it happened on Highway 13/17 South when PETA workers visited a home for a welfare check on three dogs and found them dead.
According to deputies, the dogs were severely decayed and died while chained up outside.
Deputies say they contacted the homeowner and her daughter, discovering the pair hadn’t lived there for a while and that someone else was supposed to be caring for the dogs.
The sheriff’s office says that the dogs were so decomposed that a necropsy could not be performed.
Tanikia Peele, 47, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of animal abandonment.
