PEMBROKE — Wingate scored 25 points in the first quarter to help fuel a 70-58 victory over the UNC Pembroke women’s basketball team in the season opener on Friday evening at Lumbee Guarnaty Bank Court as part of the Conference Challenge.
The setback for the Braves (0-1) marked the first time since the 2022-23 season that UNCP has lost its opening contest. The Bulldogs (1-0) improve to 15-7 when playing UNCP in Pembroke and have won the last five contests in Pembroke.
The game began with the Bulldogs establishing dominance through a series of successful plays, starting with a layup by Purnell Swett alumnus Kylie Chavis at 9:34.
