Newark Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that left one car overturned and several people hospitalized late Thursday night.

The collision occurred around 10:20 p.m. on Route 21 near Exit 5 for Chester Avenue.

Emergency crews arrived to find as many as five vehicles involved in the wreck, including one that had flipped onto its side with an occupant trapped inside.

Firefighters and University Hospital Rescue personnel quickly worked to free the individual, who was safely pulled from the overturned vehicle.

Several occupants from the involved vehicles were transported to nearby hospitals, though none of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
