Peoria Unified School District governing board approved its policy titled, “No Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives,” at its Nov. 13 public meeting.
The hot button topic has received opposition from some and a variety of edits after its first reading.
The board vote heated up when governing board member Janelle Bowles made a motion to approve the policy and governing board member Melissa Ewing requested additional comment but was refused.
Ewing was the lone dissenter from an otherwise unanimous board.
The president and the courts have yet to decide on a proper definition of DEI, Ewing said.
