As we ponder upcoming celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution (and democracy, our market basket, international stability and the rule of law in general?), let me recommend “ The American Revolution and the Fate of the World .” It is a new book just out by a perceptive University of Maryland historian named Richard Bell. Dr. Bell’s take is that a revolution begun in military and political improbability, and with an alliance of founders with hugely diverse beliefs, ended up inspiring similarly improbable, and largely successful, upheavals all around the globe.

Beyond all that (I say too easily?), how it all came together to produce an implausibly successful result offers hope for 2026 to be a most authentic and American kind of celebration. Because current governm
