As we ponder upcoming celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution (and democracy, our market basket, international stability and the rule of law in general?), let me recommend “ The American Revolution and the Fate of the World .” It is a new book just out by a perceptive University of Maryland historian named Richard Bell. Dr. Bell’s take is that a revolution begun in military and political improbability, and with an alliance of founders with hugely diverse beliefs, ended up inspiring similarly improbable, and largely successful, upheavals all around the globe.
