SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - The west side of South Bend is cleaner today after dozens of volunteers participated in a neighborhood cleanup event.
The Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church partnered with South Bend Common Council Member Ophelia Gooden-Rodgers and Director of Engagement and Economic Empowerment Mary McAfee to sponsor the cleanup day.
Volunteers cleaned up trash around the train tracks and neighborhoods in the second district. The most picked up item was drinkware, including cans, glass and plastic bottles, and Styrofoam cups.
“We’re really interested in trying to make the west side look beautiful. So, what we’d like to ask is as we clean up, we’re asking people, ‘Please, take your trash home,’” Gooden-Rodgers said.
