Christopher Newport earned a first-round NCAA Division III tourney victory in dramatic fashion Saturday, overcoming Berry 2-1 on Michael Hackworth’s goal 5:40 into overtime.
The 22nd-ranked Captains (13-2-5) advanced to a round-of-32 match at 3 p.m. Sunday against No. 13 Lynchburg, the host of the four-team grouping. The Hornets, coached by former Virginia Wesleyan player and assistant coach Chris Yeager, defeated Transylvania of Kentucky 4-0 as Gloucester High alum Kohlby Wilson had a goal and an assist.
Asher Kuzemka’s goal 24:08 into the match, off a Drew McWhinney assist, gave the Captains a 1-0 lead. The Vikings (11-6-5) of Rome, Georgia, pulled even on Max Albertson’s goal in the 77th minute.
