CHICAGO ( WGN ) — Now that the government is reopening, people who rely on SNAP benefits should be seeing them again soon — but the immediate need for food assistance remains high.

Local churches and food pantries are hosting more giveaways Sunday while Illinois residents wait for their SNAP benefits to be restored.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository has been setting up additional distribution sites on Saturdays to help with the increased need. Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order at one of the sites Saturday directing more city resources to non-profits and food pantries.
