Ex-Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri
Jamiel Altaheri, who resigned under pressure in October as Hamtramck police chief, is considering an offer to work for New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s administration, Fox 2 reports.
Altaheri tells Fox 2 that the Mamdani administration has made an offer but declined to provide details. Before coming to Hamtramck, he worked as the commanding officer of the NYPD's Office of Equity and Inclusion.
In February 2024, the Yemeni American became Hamtramck's first Arab and Muslim police chief. Mamdani is New York's first Muslim mayor.
But in 2025, Altaheri and other city officials came under investigation for allegations of misconduct and were suspended.
