Disgraceful. Despicable. Reprehensible.
Those are just a few of the words you can use to describe the actions of a Texas state trooper who bumped into two South Carolina players in the tunnel of Kyle Field during their game against Texas A&M on Saturday -- then, had the nerve to scold them after the encounter. It was unacceptable behavior. However, unless I missed something, the Texas Department of Public Safety avoided using any adjectives when announcing the trooper was sent home.
In fact, Texas DPS didn't give a reason at all, only saying it was aware of an incident that occurred at the game and would be looking further into the matter. For all we know, the officer was relieved of his Saturday assignment because of something that happened at the popcorn stand.
Of course, we know that's not what happened. He was sent home for being a jerk to Gamecocks wide receiver Nyck Harbor and running back Oscar Adaway III. Credit to whoever made the decision to send the officer home, but it didn't go nearly far enough in holding him accountable for his actions. That can't be done without explaining what he did and why it was wrong, making clear to everyone what the trooper did wasn't cool. So, allow me to help.
What we saw was a level of insecurity unbecoming of an officer of the law. A grown man decided he needed to exert a level of dominance over college students playing a game, delivering young Black men a stark reminder of their place in society even in a moment that was supposed to be filled with joy.
2 HALVES: A&M social team teased Aggies comeback
Judging from the video, the players paid the officer no mind -- Adaway even tried to move out his way. They were worried about winning, getting back on the field after scoring a lead-extending touchdown. But that's apparently where they went wrong, not showing deference to someone a little too full of themselves. The shameful reaction of the officer was malicious. At best, it was immature.
Texas police need to take all of that into account when deciding what to do next. The officer was removed from Saturday's game and that probably doesn't go far enough. He shouldn't be allowed to work a game in that stadium again -- and he should consider himself lucky if that's where the punishment ends. Because if that's how he acts in the controlled environment of a football field, it's no telling how he is in the streets of Texas.
Ja'Marr Chase spit on Jalen Ramsey
Jalen Ramsey was ejected from Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals after he appeared to throw a punch at Bengals wideout Ja'Marr Chase. After the game, Ramsey explained that his actions were a reaction to Chase spitting on him... and now we have video footage that seemingly confirms Ramsey was telling the truth.
That is such a foul move by Chase, who had the audacity to lie about what he did. The NFL is reviewing the incident.
