LAS VEGAS ( FOX5 ) — Leaders with a local nonprofit that helps veterans say they’ve seen an uptick in need that started with the government shutdown.

The Kline Veterans Fund helps veterans and their families with emergency housing assistance and other services. The executive director of the program says since October 1, they’ve seen about a 20% increase in applications for help.

Although the shutdown is over, she says the need for help isn’t likely to drop anytime soon.

“We expect to see some latent effects and some more additional applications coming in from those folks just because those who haven’t received their SNAP benefits or other benefits that were delayed had to make some hard choices between paying rent and buying groceries for their family and have gotten behind,” she said
