TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Florida Capitol on Monday, calling on Gov. Ron DeSantis to stop the state’s first black bear hunt in a decade .
The 23-day hunting season is set to begin on Dec. 6 in four parts of the state. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved the season in August by unanimous vote.
Sierra Club of Florida’s senior organizing manager, Cris Costello, said they are asking the governor to halt the hunt.
“He’s the only one that can stop this hunt right now,” Costello said.
Busloads of people from across Florida traveled to the Capitol to oppose the hunt. Costello called the hunt premature.
