WASHINGTON ‒ A raspy-sounding Donald Trump said he developed a hoarse voice from shouting at foreign leaders over his favorite subject: trade and tariff policy.
The president did not sound his best as he talked to reporters at a Nov. 17 Oval Office event to discuss plans for next year's 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
"I feel great," Trump said when asked about his noticeably gruff voice. "I was shouting at people because they were stupid about something having to do with trade in a country, and I straightened it out. But I blew my stack at these people."
The president later added: "A country wanted to try and renegotiate the terms of their trade deal, and I wasn't happy about it."
Trump would not disclose which country he was referencing. "Why would I say that to you?" the president told a reporter.
During his second stint in the White House, Trump has staked his economic agenda on sweeping tariffs on imports in a push to rejuvenate domestic manufacturing. However, his tariff regime is at risk of being blocked by the Supreme Court, which is set to soon rule on the legality of Trump's use of emergency powers to impose the fees.
Amid concerns about rising costs in the United States, Trump last week agreed to exempt a wide range of agricultural items from his reciprocal tariffs. The goods included beef, coffee, chocolate, bananas, tomatoes, oranges and other products.
