A mother of two in DC is fighting for her life after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer, and her community is rallying behind her as medical bills and missed work begin piling up.
The Arias family is asking for prayers, support, and strength as a young mother begins treatment for triple-negative breast cancer, according to a fundraiser created to help them in their fight.
The GoFundMe, called “Stand with Dafne in Her Battle with Breast Cancer,” says she is a wife, a mother to two young daughters and a dedicated elementary school employee whose “warmth and compassion brighten the lives of so many children each day.”
In the GoFundMe, organizer Kimberly Ortiz shared the news that “Dafne has been diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) — a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer that has turned our family’s world upside down.”
A family photo posted to the fundraising page shows the couple with their two small children, seated together on the steps of a home.
According to the fundraiser, “those who know Dafne know she is a selfless person who gives so much to everyone around her. She’s always been the first to show up for others; now she needs us to show up for her.”
The family says the GoFundMe will help cover medical expenses, time away from work, and unexpected costs that come with treatment.
“Every donation, prayer, and share means the world to her and her family,” the page reads. “No amount is too small and your support gives her strength to keep fighting and to focus on what matters most: healing and being there for her little girls.”
Loved ones are also stepping up publicly.
In a Facebook post, relative Vanessa Copland asked the community to surround the family with support.
“Family and friends, today I want to ask for your support for the family of my cousin Jonathan Arias, who are going through a very difficult time,” she wrote. “Any monetary help, no matter how small, will be a great blessing to them in this time of need.”
She also urged people to pray that “God will give you strength, comfort, and guidance every step of the way.”
The GoFundMe has raised more than $11,000 from more than 150 donors.
"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing with Dafne and believing in her fight," Ortiz said.
"Together, we can help her through this chapter and remind her that she’s not alone, she’s surrounded by love, faith, and a community that believes in her strength."
