Former Calgary French school teacher Mario Joseph Denis Arsenault was convicted Monday for sexually abusing a female student more than two decades ago.

In a ruling given in the offender’s mother tongue, Justice Francine Roy found Arsenault, 59, guilty of charges of sexual assault and two of sexual exploitation over incidents between August 2000 and April 2003.

The Alberta Court of Justice judge said where Arsenault’s evidence differed from the complainant, she accepted the now 39-year-old’s evidence.

The woman, who can’t be identified, testified in August she developed a relationship with Arsenault when he was a first-year teacher at Ecole Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys and she was a Grade 9 student.
