The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed a "special revision" of Assam's electoral roll, setting the stage for preparatory work ahead of the state Assembly elections scheduled for 2026.

The instructions were issued on Monday, November 17, to the chief electoral officer of Assam, as per PTI.

The poll authority has specified January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date for the special revision exercise.

This revision process falls somewhere between the annual special revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to the officials cited by PTI.

The Election Commission had last month ordered the SIR exercise across 12 states and Union Territories, including poll bound Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
