India’s electronics manufacturing ambitions will need far greater scale, stronger design capabilities and a deeper local ecosystem if the country wants to cement its position in global value chains, according to industry leaders who spoke to CNBC-TV18, even as the government cleared another round of investment proposals under its electronic component production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), said India has made visible progress but must now accelerate. “We have crossed the first big milestone of building capacity, but this is not the finish line,” he said. “For a sustainable global play, we need scale, we need design, and we need a strong component ecosystem to back assembly.”
