The American Wine Society (AWS) competition results were released recently, and the Eastern states, including Pennsylvania, were well-represented.

It’s a national competition that has been held since 1986, with two classes: commercial and amateur. Wines are judged blind by AWS-certified and other industry judges, leading to the following awards: double gold, gold, silver, bronze, best of show, and category-specific honors.

As just an aside, every winery has a different philosophy when it comes to which contests and how many they choose to enter during a calendar year. Most enter at least a couple, whether it’s state, regional, and/or national. If they have success in a contest, especially over a couple of years, they’ll continue to enter it.
