A Kardinya home has been destroyed in a raging fire believed to be caused by an electrical fault in a solar panel.

The home on Kirk Road went up in flames about 3.30pm on Monday, with footage showing the roof of the one-storey property engulfed in fire near solar panels.

It is reported a father and son were inside the home at the time, before a neighbour alerted them to the blaze.

A St John WA spokeswoman said ambulances were not initially called to the fire.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services district officer Stuart Gilbert said about 10 firefighting crews were confronted with a “very large fire and significant winds blowing smoke across the road.”

Emergency services issued a smoke alert for parts of Kardinya and Winthrop after the home went up in flames.
