Filmmaker SS Rajamouli is at the centre of a backlash after recent statements triggered a section of the audience that believes strongly in the existence of a higher power. The popular director, who often draws references from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, said at the event for his upcoming film that he doesn't believe in God.
Rajamouli has titled his new film ‘Varanasi', after the holy city of Kashi, which has a deep significance in Hinduism. During the grand launch event in Hyderabad last weekend, he said that although he is fascinated by Hindu texts, he identifies as an atheist -- a statement that didn't sit well with those who have admired him for glorifying Hindu mythology, culture, and religious themes in his films.
What did Rajamouli say that caused offence?
