State authorities are investigating after police said a deer was illegally killed this past weekend in Brownstown Township.

A caller in the Wayne County community reported hearing gunshots in the area of Telegraph and West roads, police said in a social media post .

An officer found a vehicle he believed was connected to illegal hunting. In coordination with a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer, police found a suspected hunting site, a spent shell casing and a .270 caliber rifle that had been hidden in the woods, authorities said.

They also found a deer carcass and the suspected illegal hunter. The suspect hasn't been identified; the DNR is now handling the case, police said.

DNR representatives didn't immediately return a message seeking information.
