The local Marine Corps League celebrated the Corps’ 250th birthday Nov. 15 at its annual Tun Tavern party at the Waverly Area Veterans Post.

“This is the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps,” said Commandant J.P. Sager on the morning of the event. “Marines, we take our birthday very seriously. We were born in a bar back on Nov. 10, 1775, Tun Tavern Bar in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.”

Sager noted that while the Marine Corps was founded after the Army and the Navy, it is considered the oldest branch of the military because it never disbanded after its founding.

Like the Army and the Navy, “we actually came about during the Revolution,” he explained. “We were a Continental Marine Corps. And then when the United States came about, it turned into the United States Marine Corps.”
