The UN Security Council has backed Donald Trump’s Gaza plan, authorising an international stabilisation force and a “board of peace” led by the US President to restore order in the war-ravaged territory.
The 15-member council voted 13-0 in favour of the resolution, which also envisions a path to Palestinian statehood, after Russia and China abstained and declined to use their veto power.
A rival proposal circulated by Russia failed to get up.
The vote was seen as a crucial next step for the fragile ceasefire and efforts to outline Gaza’s future following two years of war between Israel and Hamas.
Arab and other Muslim countries that expressed interest in providing troops for an international force had signalled that Security Council authorisation was essential for their participation.
