President Donald Trump tested out his "affordability" pitch during a speaking engagement on Monday night, according to a new report, and that pitch included a reminder to voters about how "lucky" they are that he defeated former President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.
Trump appeared at the McDonald's Impact Summit at the Westin Hotel in Washington, D.C., where he gave a speech about tackling issues wrought during the Biden administration. He also discussed affordability, something he has asked Republicans to talk about more after seeing Democrats sweep a series of high-profile races during the November 4 election.
At one point during Trump's pitch, he reminded voters that they are "lucky" he won the 2024 election, Politico reported.
"We took over a mess," Trump said.
"You probably would have had a bankrupt country. You are so damn lucky that I won that election, I’m telling you,” Trump added.
Experts have suggested that Democrats' messaging around affordability is what delivered election victories for the party in early November.
For instance, Democrats picked up the Governor's office in Virginia and New Jersey. They also won the Virginia Lieutenant Governor's and Attorney General races.
Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani also focused his messaging on affordability on his way to winning the New York City mayor's race.
