The man accused of fatally shooting beloved Northern California football coach John Beam was charged with murder Monday after he confessed to the killing, according to allegations in court documents obtained Monday.

Cedric Irving Jr., 27, told authorities that he used a firearm found in his bag to shoot Beam, who was gunned down Thursday at Laney College in Oakland, according to a probable cause declaration filed in Alameda County Superior Court. Beam died of his injuries Friday.

Irving was taken into custody early Friday at an Oakland-area transit station after he was seen in security video from the scene, the declaration alleged.

Irving appears to have no criminal history, nor had he been a student-athlete at Laney, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson told report
