It’s not often that when a journalist asks a sitting governor whether they plan to run for president, the answer is a definitive—“No, absolutely not.” It’s even rarer in today’s political climate that a Democratic governor holds that office in a state President Donald Trump won by 16 points.

However, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is far from a normal post-2016 politician.

She, along with Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear—who serves as vice chair to the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) that Kelly chairs—are the only two “red state” Democratic governors.
