Irony, thy name is ICT. The ICT or International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh came full circle on Monday as it awarded the death sentence to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina . It was Hasina herself who set up the ICT in 2009, 36 years after it was mandated. The other irony has to do with Jamaat-e-Islami jumping in to demand that the ICT order is carried out.
The ICT of Bangladesh was set up by Sheikh Hasina in 2009, the year she became the PM and stayed on till the students-led quota agitation turned into a regime-change movement and ousted her in August 2024.
The last time that Bangladesh saw a free and fair election was in 2008. So, it was a democratically elected government that established the ICT, after reviving the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973.
