The Calcutta High Court has dismissed a plea for a compassionate job application put forth by Sayed Shahinoor Zaman. Zaman, who was a minor when his father passed away in 2010 while serving as an assistant headmaster, applied for a position in 2025.

Justice Amrita Sinha stated that there is no provision for reserving vacancies for minors to be filled upon attaining majority age. Zaman's lawyer had argued that the petitioner's mother had sought employment on compassionate grounds, which was not entertained by the authorities.

The court emphasized that compassionate appointments are intended to alleviate immediate financial hardships caused by the breadwinner's death, and thus, a delayed application holding the claim until reaching adulthood is not permissible.
