Independent filmmakers across India have publicly challenged the country’s exhibition and streaming landscape after Kanu Behl’s award-winning film Agra struggled to secure shows in theatres. Days after Behl spoke about the issue, 46 filmmakers, including Nandita Das, Vasan Bala and Payal Kapadia, signed a joint appeal urging fairer access for independent cinema.

The statement, shared by Behl on Instagram, came with his caption: “A Joint Statement from India’s Independent Filmmakers. Time to speak up! If we choose not to from here, then we will all be responsible for the collective erasure. Share widely and amplify."
