WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Trump administration on Monday acted to limit the scope of the landmark 1972 Clean Water Act by proposing a new definition of “Waters of the United States.”

The proposed new definition would narrow the types of waterways that fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government, including most of the nation’s wetlands.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin said the change was necessary to ease the regulatory and monetary burden on landowners and businesses hoping to develop in affected areas.

Rep. Dave Taylor, R-Ohio, who attended the EPA announcement of the proposed rule, said it would benefit his constituents.
