As The Children's Museum celebrates its 100th anniversary, it's devoting quite a bit of attention to one of its longest-tenured attractions. The carousel, a mainstay on the fourth floor since the current building opened almost 50 years ago, will receive an overhaul that will condition it to survive well into the future.
That work will balance the carousel's ability to run while keeping its historic charm. The ride was first assembled in Indianapolis at a Broad Ripple amusement park in 1917 with 42 animals. It lived there until 1956, when the pavilion that housed it collapsed, crushing the mechanism but sparing the creatures.
