When Michael and NixB Slider started hosting a small group of friends in their basement in February to talk about the news and policies coming out of the Trump administration, it quickly became a cathartic bonding exercise for the often-outnumbered Democrats within their Oldham County social group.
Michael Slider, a former principal within Jefferson County Public Schools who’s always been politically minded, said he was surprised when NixB started expressing concerns about politics. NixB Slider had always been nonpolitical, Michael Slider said, using Facebook to connect with family — not posting about federal policies. But within a few weeks of President Donald Trump taking office, the newly formed Kentucky Citizens for Democracy had grown so large, the meetings moved to a local church.
