PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A pedestrian was hit and killed on a Phoenix freeway interchange in the early overnight hours on Tuesday.

Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers responded to the reported crash around 1:45 a.m. on the northbound McDowell Road off-ramp on I-17, near “the stack” interchange.

Troopers found that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle near the off-ramp. Arizona’s Family confirmed at the scene that the person died from their injuries.

The driver involved did remain at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. They were not taken into custody.

What led to this crash and why the person was on the road are still unclear.

The off-ramp was blocked for several hours as crews worked to clear the crash scene.
