MICHIGAN, USA — West Michigan doctors are prepared to face another tough flu season.

The CDC reports over 1,600 children are hospitalized with the flu this November.

By mid-September, the CDC reported over 280 children had died from the flu. 89% of those children did not receive the flu vaccine.

“Getting your flu vaccine is really helpful in reducing your risk of hospitalization and death,” Dr. Cameron McKenney from Western Michigan Pediatrics said. “For children, other things that can be done is washing hands, making sure we're staying home when we're not feeling well…But the most effective thing that we can do is getting our kids vaccinated.”

Dr. McKenney says children should be hospitalized if their symptoms worsen, such as having shortness of breath or signs of dehydration
