A guitar that helped change music history is heading to the auction block next year. The left-handed 1969 Fender Competition Mustang that Kurt Cobain played in Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video will be sold at Christie’s New York in March, according to Guitar World .
The teal-colored instrument was used by Cobain during recording sessions for Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and “In Utero” albums.
The guitar appeared prominently in the “ Smells Like Teen Spirit ” video, which has been viewed more than 1.4 billion times on YouTube and earned recognition from MTV as one of the “100 Greatest Music Videos Ever Made.”
The Nirvana frontman is believed to have acquired the Mustang in 1990 or 1991 and referred to it as his favorite guitar.
