New Delhi, Nov 18 Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced a reduction in freight charges for bulk cement transportation using tank containers, aiming to lower costs for affordable housing. The new rate structure simplifies charges based on actual tonnage, eliminating previous weight and distance slabs, with a flat rate of Rs 0.90 per tonne per kilometre.
The policy promotes pollution-free logistics and end-to-end multimodal transportation. It includes the development of bulk cement terminals to enhance handling and distribution efficiency.
The initiative is expected to reduce transportation costs and environmental impact while improving turnaround times. Additionally, India has become the second-largest railway freight carrier globally, with expanded and electrified rail networks.
