New York(US): Human Rights Watch (HRW) has raised serious concerns over the fairness of the trial in which Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for “crimes against humanity.”
The two were convicted in absentia for allegedly ordering the violent suppression of student-led protests in 2024. HRW noted that the case was conducted without the defendants being represented by lawyers of their choosing, violating international fair trial standards.
"There is enduring anger and anguish in Bangladesh over Hasina's repressive rule, but all criminal proceedings need to meet international fair trial standards," said Meenakshi Ganguly, Deputy Asia Director at HRW. She added that accountability
