Liev Schreiber has been cleared to return to work after a health scare.
A representative for the "Ray Donovan" star, 58, confirmed in a statement provided to USA TODAY that the actor recently checked into a hospital in New York City due to an unspecified medical issue.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Liev went into the hospital for testing and as of this afternoon, he has been cleared to return to work," the representative for Schreiber said in the statement provided to media outlets on Monday, Nov. 17.
Schreiber's representative did not specify the nature of his health issue. The statement came after TMZ first reported the actor had been hospitalized.
Schreiber previously opened up about a health scare that he faced while he was starring in "Doubt" on Broadway, which left him unable to perform because he couldn't remember any of his lines.
During an April 2024 appearance on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," Schreiber recalled getting a "really bad headache" in his dressing room before the show and realizing "something was really wrong" when he couldn't recall his costar Amy Ryan's name.
"I go on, and I do about the first six or seven lines of the play, sort of automatically," he said. "I realize I'm not connected, so I decide, let me try and get connected again. And the minute I do that, it all vanishes. The play is gone from my head. I'm looking out into a dark audience. I know I'm in a play, but I don't know what play I'm in. I look down at my clothes, and I realize I'm a priest, which is helpful, but not giving me any lines."
Schreiber, whose understudy took over the play, said he assumed he had a stroke, but his MRI results were "perfectly fine." He ultimately found out "from a neurologist I had something called transient global amnesia," Schreiber said. According to the Mayo Clinic, transient global amnesia is an "episode of confusion that comes on suddenly in a person who is otherwise alert."
Schreiber said his doctor told him he would "never have this again," but the "hypochondriac" in him was "convinced that I've had a stroke and they just didn't find it." By the following morning, though, he was able to recall his lines again.
"I never had another problem with it," Schreiber said. "I was embarrassed and thought everyone would think I was lying and taking a night off from the theater."
