Madison's annual somber-but-celebratory Veterans Day program on Nov. 11, came with a recognition decades in the making, as the family of a deceased veteran received awards on his behalf.
During the Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918, enemy forces shot Fred Heibult through the hip and pelvis. Around him, his friends and fellow soldiers dropped to the ground, dying as victims of their opponents' bullets. ×
